Upcoming establishment of the Agency for Minorities, Migrations and Asylum in Portugal
An article in the “Expresso” newspaper, dated 21 October, reported on the upcoming establishment of the Agency for Minorities, Migrations and Asylum. This new agency, set to replace the Immigration and Border Service by the end of the month, has sparked concerns among immigrants in Portugal. They cite a lack of transparency and anticipate an increase in bureaucracy. Currently, the Immigration and Border Service handles residence permits, a process that can take years for immigrants to regularise their status in Portugal. Meanwhile, foreigners can work and make social security contributions, but they are prevented from leaving the country due to their irregular situation.
