Portugal’s humanitarian efforts for Afghan Refugees

Expresso reported that Portugal joined the international humanitarian reception directive for Afghanistan following the fall of Kabul. Since then, the country has welcomed 1,391 Afghan refugees, including 711 men and 680 women. Most of these refugees are adults (almost 67 percent) and couples with children (59.1 percent).

In 2023 alone, Portugal received 472 Afghan citizens (237 men and 235 women), and in January 2024, an additional 13 citizens (seven men and six women), according to the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA). Since 2021, approximately 1.4 million Afghans have fled the country, with 900,000 Shias escaping the Sunni Taliban to Iran.
